KSO Wood Pressed Coconut Oil — the way our grandmothers made it
Our wood pressed coconut oil is extracted using the traditional Kerala chekku method — slow rotation of a wooden mortar-pestle driven by low-speed machinery that generates minimal heat (under 50°C). This preserves the natural coconut aroma, antioxidants, lauric acid, and medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that are destroyed in commercial refined coconut oil production.
Wood-pressed vs refined coconut oil — why it matters
- Extraction temperature: Wood pressed <50°C vs refined 200°C+. High heat destroys heat-sensitive nutrients.
- Chemicals: Wood pressed uses no solvents. Refined oil is extracted with hexane solvent.
- Aroma: Wood pressed retains natural coconut fragrance. Refined is odourless (and often “coconut flavouring” is added back).
- Nutrition: Wood pressed retains polyphenols, tocopherols, lauric acid. Refined has most of these stripped away.
- Colour: Wood pressed is pale yellow-white when liquid. Refined is colourless.
Uses for wood pressed coconut oil
Cooking: The authentic flavour of Kerala cooking. Perfect for tempering, dosa/idli, fish curry, and all South Indian dishes. Smoke point around 177°C — not ideal for very high-heat deep-frying.
Hair care: Weekly hair oil champi — warm 2 tbsp, massage scalp 5 minutes, leave overnight, wash.
Oil pulling: 1 tbsp swished in mouth for 15-20 minutes, spit out. Traditional Ayurvedic oral care.
Skin: Natural moisturiser. Apply to damp skin after bath.
Baby massage: Traditional Kerala baby care. Pure wood pressed oil, warmed, used for daily massage (patch test first).
Storage
Glass bottle in cool dry place away from direct sunlight. In Kerala climate, oil solidifies below 24°C — place bottle in warm water to liquefy. Does not go rancid for 12+ months if stored properly.
FAQ
Why is my oil solid? Natural property of coconut oil below 24°C. Warming liquefies it. Solid and liquid are equally good.
Can I use for high-heat cooking? Smoke point 177°C makes it suitable for most Indian cooking. For deep-frying at 200°C+, use refined or another oil.
Is this the same as virgin coconut oil? Wood pressed and virgin both refer to cold-extracted methods. Our wood pressed uses traditional chekku method specifically.
Is it good for babies? Yes — traditional Kerala baby massage oil. Patch test; warm before use.
